Cabinet Refinishing vs. Replacement: Which Saves More?

September 2026

Kitchen cabinets are one of the most expensive parts of a kitchen to replace — and often one of the parts that needs it least. Here's how to think through refinishing versus replacing.

When refinishing makes sense

If your cabinet boxes are solid — no water damage, no structural issues, doors and drawers still function properly — refinishing gets you a dramatically different look for a fraction of replacement cost. Solid wood cabinets in particular refinish well since there's real material underneath to work with. This is also a much faster process: days, not the weeks a full replacement project usually takes.

When replacement is the better call

If the boxes are damaged, warped, or you're changing the actual layout (moving cabinets, changing configuration, adding an island), replacement is usually unavoidable. Laminate or thermofoil cabinets can sometimes be refinished but are more failure-prone than solid wood or real wood veneer — worth having evaluated in person rather than assumed.

What refinishing actually involves

Degreasing (kitchen cabinets accumulate more grease and grime than people expect, even with regular cleaning), sanding to give the new finish something to grip, priming to block stains and old color from bleeding through, then a sprayed or hand-finished topcoat. Hardware typically comes off, gets labeled, and goes back on — or gets swapped for an easy, lower-cost style refresh at the same time.

The real cost comparison

Full cabinet replacement in a mid-size kitchen is commonly the single largest line item in a kitchen remodel. Refinishing the same space is typically a small fraction of that cost, which is why it's one of the highest-value updates we're asked to do.
